Another year in the books for full season leagues

Where has this team been all year
Sir Sidney's last stand

Sandwich rounder Jeremy Bleich will start one of Staten Island’s playoff games next week.  There’s still a week left in their season, and they haven’t clinched a postseason berth yet, but with a 3.5 game league in the McNamara Division, they’re sitting pretty.

You may remember that Ian Kennedy did something similar after signing late in 2006, making a pair of three inning starts for SI – one at the end of the year, one in the playoffs.  The length of the starts was by design, and I suspect Bleich will be held to a similar limit.  Good to know the elbow’s not an issue though, that should shut some people up.

Triple-A Scranton (4-2 loss to Syracuse)
Justin Christian: 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB – threw a runner out at home from LF
Matt Carson: 0 for 3, 1 RBI, 2 K
Juan Miranda: 1 for 3, 1 BB, 1 E (fielding)
Shelley Duncan, Ben Broussard, Nick Green & Bernie Castro: all 1 for 4, 1 K – Shelley swiped a bag … Broussard tripled, swiped a bag & scored a run … Green doubled & drove in a run … Castro committed a fielding error
Eric Duncan: 0 for 4, 2 K
Phil Hughes: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 8 K, 6-3 GB/FB – 67 of 104 pitches were strikes (64.4%) … too many walks, but he’s working on it
Zack Kroenke: 1.1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 3-0 GB/FB – 10 pitches (8 strikes), 3 groundballs & a strikeout … gotta love it
Scott Patterson: 0.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 0-1 GB/FB – and there goes the game
Scott Strickland: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K

Scranton’s season is over; they finished the year 88-56, which ties Louisville for the best record in all of AAA baseball.  They won the IL North Division and will be taking on those pesky Pawtucket Red Sox in the first round of the playoffs.  Chase Wright & Ian Kennedy will get the ball in Games 1 & 2, respectively, and they’ll be opposed by knuckleballer Charlie Zink & former lobster fisherman Devern Hansack.  The series starts on Wednesday.

Double-A Trenton (4-3 win over Connecticut)
Reegie Corona: 2 for 3, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Ramiro Pena, Austin Jackson & Colin Curtis (aka the 2-3-4 hitters): all 0 for 4 – Pena K’ed twice, Ajax once
Kevin Russo: 1 for 4, 2 R, 1 K, 1 SB
PJ Pilittere: 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 PB
Chris Malec & Edwar Gonzalez: both 1 for 3, 1 RBI – Edwar doubled, giving him an organization leading 63 XBH on the year
James Cooper: 1 for 2, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 BB
Humberto Sanchez: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K – he’ll be with Trenton through the playoffs
Chris Garcia: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 BB, 5 K, 7-4 GB/FB – settle down kid
Mike Dunn: 1.2IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 2-1 GB/FB – oh yeah, he’s up from Tampa too … allowed 2 inherited runners to score, hence the runs on Garcia’s line
Jose Valdez: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K

Trenton’s season is over; they finished with the best record in all of AA baseball at 86-54.  They’ll be taking on Portland (another Red Sox affiliate) in the first round of the playoffs.  It looks like Eric Hacker & Jeff Marquez will be the starters for Games 1 & 2, and they’ll be opposed by Kris Johnson (the kid the Sox took one spot ahead of Joba in the ’06 draft) & some felon named Clay.  The series starts on Wednesday.

High-A Tampa‘s season ended yesterday, and they did not qualify for the postseason.  You can find Florida State League playoff coverage here.

Low-A Charleston (4-2 loss to Savannah) Austin Romine, Jesus Montero & Bradley Suttle all got the last day of the season off … lame, talk about a buzzkill
Carmen Angelini: 2 for 4, 2 R – finishes the year at .236-.302-.295 … yikes
Justin Snyder & Matt Morris: both 1 for 3, 1 2B, 1 K – Snyder doubled, drove in a run & walked
Brandon Laird, Abe Almonte & Chase Weems: all 0 for 4 – Laird & Almonte K’ed
David Williams: 1 for 4, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
Prilys Cuello: 2 for 3, 1 CS, , 2 E (both throwing)
Taylor Holiday: 1 for 2, 1 BB, 1 CS
Lance Pendleton: 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 3 WP, 1 HB, 6-4 GB/FB – finishes the year with 119 K in 128 IP
Craig Heyer: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 5-1 GB/FB

Charleston’s season is over; they finished the year 80-59, 8.0 GB in the tough SAL South Division.  They did not qualify for the postseason.  You can find South Atlantic League playoff coverage here.

Short Season Staten Island (6-3 win over Hudson Valley)
Ray Kruml (11) & Brian Baisley: both 1 for 5, 1 RBI – Krum K’ed twice … Baisley doubled & drove in a run
David Adams (3) & Braedyn Pruitt: both 1 for 3, 1 R – Adams walked, was hit by a pitch, drove in a run & K’ed … Pruitt drew a pair of walks
Dan Brewer (8): 3 for 4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB, 1 HBP – 9 for his last 20 (.450)
Mike Lyon (24): 1 for 3, 1 RBI
Mitch Abeita (19): 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K
Taylor Grote: 0 for 3, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K – 72 K in only 181 at-bats
Roy Gomez: 0 for 4, 1 K
David Phelps (14): 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 12-1 GB/FB – dominant … again
Mike Obradovich: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 2-1 GB/FB
Jason Kiley: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
Brad Rulon (34): 0.1 IP, zeroes, 1 K

The Rookie GCL Yanks‘ season is over. The GCL Phils won the league championship.
