Some thoughts from Opening Night

Two links to pass along before we get started. First, Baseball America put together a list of the youngest players in each league, but for whatever reason they forgot about Jesus Montero. His birthday is listed as November 28th, 1989, which should make him the youngest player in the Triple-A International League by more than two months. Further down the ladder you have Manny Banuelos, who is the youngest player in the High-A Florida State League by a good seven months.

Second, Padres executive vice president Paul DePodesta fired off a blog post about losing Chad Huffman on waivers to the Yanks. He throws some praise the player’s way.

And now, what you’ve waited all winter for. As per Opening Day tradition, you get the full lineups…

Triple-A Scranton (1-0 win over Buffalo)
Kevin Russo, 3B: 1 for 3, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
Reegie Corona, 2B: 0 for 4, 2 K
Juan Miranda, 1B: 1 for 3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K – he kills this league
David Winfree, RF: 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K – first homer of the season in the farm system
Jon Weber, DH: 1 for 3
Jesus Montero, C: 1 for 3, 1 2B – doubled in his first Triple-A plate appearance
Colin Curtis, LF: 0 for 3, 1 K
Eduardo Nunez, SS: 0 for 3
Greg Golson, CF: 0 for 3
Ivan Nova, SP: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 2-4 GB/FB – 34 of 49 pitches were strikes (69.4%) … left the game after a lengthy rain delay … rock solid season debut, if he keeps it up, he’ll be the first guy called up when the big league team needs a starter
Mark Melancon: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 5-0 GB/FB – 16 of 23 pitches were strikes (69.6%) … same as he always was
Boone Logan: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 2-0 GB/FB – 18 of 22 pitches were strikes (81.8%) … damn yo
Jon Albaladejo: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 0-1 GB/FB – 7 of 12 pitches were strikes (58.3%)

Double-A Trenton (4-0 win over Erie)
Austin Krum, CF: 1 for 4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI
David Adams, 2B: 1 for 4
Austin Romine, C: 1 for 4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
Brandon Laird, 3B: 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 K – he started out slow last year, so hopefully he stays consistent all year in 2010
Damon Sublett, LF: 0 for 3, 1 BB, 1 K
Reid Gorecki, DH: 0 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 BB – man, this guy got the shaft … he hit .286-.315-.464 in Triple-A last year!
Kevin Smith, 1B: 0 for 4, 2 K
Dan Brewer, RF: 0 for 2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Luis Nunez, SS: 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 K, 1 E (throwing)
Chris Garcia, SP: 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HB, 8-5 GB/FB – 48 of 69 pitches were strikes (69.6%) … Mike Ashmore said he was at 89-92 with the fastball … he left the game in the middle of an at-bat with elbow soreness, and it’s pretty serious … sigh
Wilkins Arias: 1.1 IP, zeroes, 2-2 GB/FB
Noel Castillo: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2-0 GB/FB – he’s got a great arm, just a little wild at times
Grant Duff: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 1-0 GB/FB – can he build on last year’s breakout?

High-A Tampa (4-0 win over Lakeland)
Abe Almonte, LF: 2 for 4, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K – hopefully he picks up where he left off last year, because he finished the year en fuego
Jose Pirela, SS: 3 for 4, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 SB
Corban Joseph, 2B: 1 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS
Bradley Suttle, 1B: 0 for 4 – first official game in 21 months
Neil Medchill, RF: 0 for 2, 2 BB
Melky Mesa, CF: 0 for 4
Trent Lockwood, 1B: 0 for 4 – who?
Mitch Abeita, C: 2 for 3, 1 R, 1 2B – poor guy is stuck in the wrong organization for fringy catching prospects
Myron Leslie, DH: 1 for 3, 1 R, 2 K
Hector Noesi, SP: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 5-6 GB/FB – fantastic start for a guy that could climb the ladder pretty quickly this year … I hesitate to call him a sleeper, but he’s one guy that I don’t think gets enough attention
Brandon Braboy: 3 IP, zeroes, 3 K, 3-3 GB/FB – now that’s what you call a save

Low-A Charleston (5-2 win over Lexington)
Jimmy Paredes, 2B: 0 for 4, 1 K, 2 SB – he reached on an error, then stole second & third
DeAngelo Mack, LF: 0 for 3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB – I guess he won’t be giving CF a try after all
Zoilo Almonte, CF: 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 CS – threw a runner out at second
Luke Murton, 1B: 1 for 4, 1 R, 3 K – Matt’s brother should crush this level
Rob Lyerly, 3B: 3 for 4, 1 R, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 1 K – he might be the org’s best power prospect after Montero
Kyle Higashioka, C: 0 for 4, 1 K
Taylor Grote, RF: 2 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 K
Garrison Lassiter, DH: 1 for 3, 1 K
Kelvin Perez, SS: 0 for 3, 1 E (throwing)
Schaeffer Hall, SP: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 9-4 GB/FB – 2009 25th rounder made just two starts for Short Season Staten Island last year due to injury
Ronny Marte: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2-0 GB/FB
Francisco Rondon: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 0-1 GB/FB
Ryan Flannery: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1-1 GB/FB – last year’s workhorse closer in Staten Island

Unfortunately, 2009 first rounder Slade Heathcott is starting his season in Extended Spring Training. Apparently his spring was only so-so. Corban Joseph started the season in ExST just last year, but made his way to Charleston in early May and finished the season as one of the organization’s top prospects, so don’t freak out.
