Game 101: The Newest Ranger
Yankees have no answer for Garza; fall 3-1 to Rangers

UTIL Jose Pirela has been bumped up from Double-A Trenton to Triple-A Scranton, reports Donnie Collins. He’ll essentially replace the recently called up IF David Adams on the roster. Josh Norris says IF Dan Fiorito has been called up from High-A Tampa to take Pirela’s old spot with the Thunder.

Meanwhile, make sure you check out Penn League Report’s interview with 3B Eric Jagielo. The team’s first first rounder in last month’s draft credits Alex Rodriguez for helping improve his approach.

Triple-A Scranton (4-1 win over Toledo)

  • 3B Ronnie Mustelier: 1-4, 1 R — 2-for-27 (.074) since coming off the DL
  • DH Randy Ruiz: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K — 12 homers in 36 games since signing last month
  • C J.R. Murphy: 0-3, 2 K
  • RHP Brett Marshall: 8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 12/5 GB/FB — 61 of 97 pitches were strikes (63%) … 2.92 ERA in his last six starts (37 innings)
  • RHP Dellin Betances: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 1/2 GB/FB — half of his 24 pitches were strikes … six walks in his last seven innings

Double-A Trenton (4-2 loss to Altoona)

  • LF Ramon Flores: 1-4
  • CF Slade Heathcott: 1-4, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K — hitting .292/.340/.444 in his last 68 games, though the 24.7% strikeout rate is a bit of an eyesore
  • RHP Shane Greene: 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 8/6 GB/FB — 59 of 85 pitches were strikes (69%) … 97/19 K/BB in a farm system leading 113.2 innings
  • LHP Cesar Cabral: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 18 of 24 pitches were strikes (75%) … 15/4 K/BB in his last 12.1 innings
  • RHP Danny Burawa: 1 IP, zeroes, 0/1 GB/FB — six of ten pitches were strikes

High-A Tampa (4-2 loss to Palm Beach)

  • CF Mason Williams: 1-3, 1 CS
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • DH Peter O’Brien & C Gary Sanchez: both 0-4 — O’Brien struck out twice and is in an 0-for-18 rut … good to see Sanchez back after tweaking something running the bases a few days ago
  • RHP Bryan Mitchell: 6 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 9/2 GB/FB — 15/2 K/BB in his last 16 innings

Low-A Charleston had a scheduled off-day.

Short Season Staten Island (7-6 loss to Connecticut, walk-off style)

  • SS Jose Rosario: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — got picked off first
  • LF Michael O’Neill: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB
  • 3B Eric Jagielo: 0-3, 2 BB, 1 K — stuck in a 2-for-17 (.118) slump
  • CF Brandon Thomas: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
  • 1B Bubba Jones: 3-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 HBP — 13 hits in his last 34 at-bats (.383)
  • LHP Caleb Smith: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 1/5 GB/FB — 29/7 K/BB in 24.2 innings

Rookie GCL Yanks1 (8-6 loss to GCL Pirates in eleven innings)

  • DH Abi Avelino: 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB — three straight two-hit games
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • 3B Jayson Nix: 0-2, 1 HBP — played five innings in the field in his first rehab game … he and Curtis Granderson will be with High-A Tampa tomorrow
  • 1B Chris Breen: 3-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 E (throwing) — 14 hits in his last 38 at-bats (.368) with four doubles, two triples, and two homers
  • RF Austin Aune: 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 3 K
  • SS Tyler Wade: 2-5, 1 R, 1 K
  • RHP Mark Montgomery: 1.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K — ten strikeouts in zero walks in 5.1 innings here … he was battling control big time before the shoulder injury
  • SwP Pat Venditte: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1/1 GB/FB

Rookie GCL Yanks2 were rained out again. They’re going to play a doubleheader tomorrow. Yesterday’s rainout will be made up as part of a doubleheader on August 7th.
