Game 99: Bullpen Game
Yankees, offense absolutely annihilate Rangers for a 21-5 victory

Quick note: Yankees prospects will play for the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League this year, the league announced. They suited up for the Scottsdale Scorpions the last few years. They’ll share the team with Royals, Brewers, Cardinals, and Rangers prospects. Double-A Trenton pitching coach Jose Rosado will be Surprise’s pitching coach.

Triple-A Scranton (5-3 win over Lehigh Valley)

  • CF Ben Gamel: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 E (fielding) — threw a runner out at second
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder & 1B Greg Bird: both 0-4 — Refsnyder got hit by a pitch, drove in a run, and struck out … Bird walks
  • RF Aaron Judge: 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 K — also threw two runners out at second … after the game, Dave Rosengrant asked about the outfield assists, and Judge said “defense is probably one of my favorite things, except for hitting home runs, I guess”
  • C Gary Sanchez: 0-2, 1 R, 2 BB
  • LF Ramon Flores: 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 3B Jose Pirela: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • DH Austin Romine: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K — he’s having a very good year, but with Sanchez here, Romine will get the short end of the playing time stick
  • RHP Joel De La Cruz: 5 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 6/1 GB/FB — 49 of 80 pitches were strikes (61%) … gets the spot start with RHP Diego Moreno in the big leagues
  • RHP Wilking Rodriguez: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 31 of 44 pitches were strikes (70%) … 13/3 K/BB in 10.2 innings since coming back from his 80-game banned substance suspension
  • RHP Johnny Barbato: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0/1 GB/FB — 11 of 19 pitches were strikes (58%)

Double-A Trenton (2-1 win over Portland)

  • CF Jake Cave: 1-4, 1 K, 1 SB
  • DH Tony Renda: 1-2, 1 R — got picked off first and was ejected for arguing the call
  • RHP Danny Burawa: 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 2/3 GB/FB, 1 E (pickoff) — only 30 of 62 pitches were strikes (48%)
  • RHP Andrew Bailey: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 1/1 GB/FB — 13 of 17 pitches were strikes (76%)
  • RHP Mark Montgomery: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K — 14 of 21 pitches were strikes (67%)

High-A Tampa (3-1 win over Jupiter)

  • 2B Tyler Wade & CF Dustin Fowler: both 0-4
  • SS Abi Avelino: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K, 1 SB
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B — 24-for-70 (.343) in his last 20 games
  • RHP Cale Coshow: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 8/2 GB/FB — Jeff Moore says Coshow was sitting 93-96 and touching 97, but without much in the way of secondary pitches

Low-A Charleston (2-1 win over Greenville)

  • RF Slade Heathcott: 2-3 — played seven innings in the field this time
  • CF Austin Aune: 1-3, 1 K
  • RHP Joey Maher: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HB, 8/3 GB/FB — 53 of 83 pitches were strikes (64%)
  • RHP Chance Adams: 2 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 4/1 GB/FB — 14 of 22 pitches were strikes (64%) … he got knocked around pretty good last time out, but otherwise this year’s fifth rounder is carving up the low minors like you’d expect a veteran college reliever to do

Short Season Staten Island (5-3 loss to Batavia)

  • CF Jeff Hendrix: 1-4, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB
  • SS Kyle Holder: 2-5
  • 2B Thairo Estrada: 1-3, 2 RBI — Summer of Thairo
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K — threw a runner out at home
  • 3B Brandon Wagner: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Domingo Acevedo: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 36 of 54 pitches were strikes (67%) … 18/7 K/BB in 17.1 innings

Rookie level Pulaski (14-9 win over Kingsport) they were down 7-0 after two innings but rallied back, scoring nine runs in the eighth to take the lead … Fighting Spirit is spreading throughout the organization

  • CF Carlos Vidal: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 SB — the 19-year-old from Colombia is having himself one heck of a season so far
  • SS Hyo-Jun Park: 0-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 3 BB, 1 K — 24/18 K/BB in 29 games so far
  • LF Nathan Mikolas: 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI
  • RHP Melvin Morla: 1.1 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HB, 2/1 GB/FB — Capuano-esque
  • RHP Cody Carroll: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HB, 3/0 GB/FB — 18/9 K/BB in 13.2 innings for this year’s 22nd rounder
  • RHP Garrett Mundell: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 0/2 GB/FB — 17/3 K/BB in 13.1 innings for this year’s 23rd rounder

Rookie level GCL Yanks1 were rained out. They’ll make this game up as part of a doubleheader on August 13th.

Rookie level GCL Yanks2 had their game suspended due to rain in the fourth inning. They’ll complete it on August 12th. Here’s the box score.
