Yankees will call up Rob Refsnyder on Saturday
Big Mike, Boston errors help Yanks to 5-1 win over Red Sox

Some news and notes to pass along:

  • Both C Gary Sanchez (8th) and 2B Rob Refsnyder (12th) made this week’s Prospect Hot Sheet. The write-up says Sanchez has “made strides this year (with) his intangibles. Those around him say the 21-year-old backstop has become more willing to listen and learn than in years past … (he has) has improved incrementally as a receiver.”
  • Check out this puff piece on RHP Luis Severino by Maria Guardado. “You certainly like to see everybody get better, but he would be competitive up (in MLB right now), I believe,” said Triple-A Scranton pitching coach Scott Aldred. “I think he can be a middle of the rotation starter, maybe higher. Just depends on how well his command comes along.”
  • Had two Josh Norris tweets bookmarked that I never passed along. One, a scout said RHP Domingo Acevedo was sitting 95-97 mph and touching 99 in a recent start. Goodness. Also, Norris asked a rival Double-A Eastern League manager to name the best hitter and pitcher in the league this year, and he said OF Aaron Judge and Severino. Neat.

Triple-A Scranton (5-4 loss to Buffalo, walk-off style) old pal Melky Mesa hit the walk-off two-run homer for Buffalo

  • CF Ben Gamel: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • 2B Jose Pirela: 0-4, 1 K
  • LF Ramon Flores: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K — threw a runner out at second
  • DH Aaron Judge: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB
  • 1B Greg Bird: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • C Austin Romine: 1-4, 2 RBI
  • RF Tyler Austin: 0-4, 3 K — grounded into a double play in his other at-bat, so his brutal year continues
  • RHP Esmil Rogers: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 5/1 GB/FB — 56 of 93 pitches were strikes (60%)
  • RHP Wilking Rodriguez: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 2/2 GB/FB — 15 of 28 pitches were strikes (54%)
  • RHP Nick Rumbelow: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 18 of 28 pitches were strikes (64%) … served up the walk-off homer to Melky2.0

Double-A Trenton (3-2 win over Richmond in ten innings, walk-off style)

  • 3B Brendan Ryan: 2-4 — played seven innings in the field by design … his rehab was moved from Triple-A to Double-A just because of travel, they didn’t want to make him ride a bus to Buffalo
  • CF Jake Cave: 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB
  • DH Gary Sanchez: 0-5, 1 K
  • 1B Rob Segedin: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI — walk-off double

  • RHP Mark Montgomery: 2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1/1 GB/FB — 23 of 36 pitches were strikes (64%) … gave up the game-tying homer in the ninth then got the win

High-A Tampa (5-4 loss to Palm Beach)

  • SS Tyler Wade: 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 E (fielding) — 10-for-17 (.589) in his last four games
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 0-4, 1 K
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RHP Gabe Encinas: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 1 K, 1 WP — woof, no good … shake it off, do better in five days

Low-A Charleston (12-6 loss to Kannapolis)

  • DH Jorge Mateo: 1-3, 1 R, 2 BB — eight walks and three strikeouts in his last ten games
  • SS Angel Aguilar: 1-5, 1 R, 3 K

Short Season Staten Island Game One (6-3 loss to Aberdeen in seven innings) makeup of yesterday’s rainout

  • CF Jeff Hendrix: 2-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • SS Kyle Holder: 2-4 — eight hits in his last 30 at-bats (.267) with an 0-for-12 mixed in
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K — no dinger? … he did throw a runner out at second though
  • 3B Drew Bridges: 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • 2B Brandon Wagner: 0-1, 1 RBI — got picked off first
  • RHP Yoel Espinal: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 1 K, 2 HB, 2/0 GB/FB — only 16 of 40 pitches were strikes (40%)

Short Season Staten Island Game Two was suspended in the top of the fifth because the power went out at the ballpark. Not sure when they’ll complete the game, but it won’t be tomorrow. Here’s the box score.

Rookie level Pulaski (6-4 win over Pulaski, walk-off style)

  • CF Carlos Vidal: 1-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI — walk-off two-run homer
  • DH Hyo-Jun Park: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 SB — hitting streak is up to 12
  • RF Frank Frias: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K
  • LF Nathan Mikolas: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K — game-tying three-run homer in the ninth for the team’s third rounder in 2012

  • CF Leonardo Molina: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 CS — 10-for-24 (.417) in his last nine games … starting to get the hang of it, maybe
  • RHP Luis Rosario: 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 Balk, 7/1 GB/FB

Rookie level GCL Yanks2 (7-2 win over GCL Astros)

  • LF Isiah Gilliam: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB
  • 3B Griffin Garabito: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
  • RHP Jonathan Holder: 2 IP, zeroes, 3 K, 2/1 GB/FB — working his way back from some kind of injury … whatever it was, it couldn’t have been too serious because he’s been out less than a month
  • RHP Brandon Stenhouse: 2 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 3/0 GB/FB
