Tyler Wade (single, walk) and Brandon Drury (single, two walks) both reached base multiple times, and Greg Bird doubled into the right field corner. Drury also made a great diving catch at the hot corner, robbing Miguel Cabrera of extra bases. Miguel Andujar had a single and Jeff Hendrix had two singles off the bench. Not much to see offensively this afternoon. Here are the box score and video highlights, and here are the rest of the day’s notes from camp:
- In case you missed it earlier, Luis Severino was announced as the Opening Day starter. He’ll be the Yankees’ youngest Opening Day starter since Lefty Gomez in 1932. Severino will be followed by Tanaka, CC Sabathia, Sonny Gray, and Jordan Montgomery in that order.
- Aaron Judge played left field in a minor league game today. He didn’t hit in the game. He only played the field. Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) is progressing well and could return to game action Tuesday. Also, Aaron Boone said there are no plans to give Wade time in the outfield this spring even though they may not carry another outfielder on the bench if Ellsbury’s isn’t ready for Opening Day. [Bryan Hoch, Brendan Kuty]
- Boone admitted it “could be tough” for Tyler Austin to crack the Opening Day roster even though he’s had a nice spring. Austin is 7-for-26 (.269) with four homers this spring. “(You) never know. He’s still here and he’s showing that he can really hit,” added Boone. [Hoch]
- The Yankees are back home to take on the Marlins tomorrow afternoon. That game will be televised. Severino is the scheduled starter and Neil Walker will play second base. [Hoch]
Here’s an open thread for the rest of the day. MLB Network is showing the Giants vs. Athletics live tonight, all the local hockey and basketball teams are playing except the Islanders, plus there’s all the day’s March Madness action as well. Talk about those games or anything else here, as long as it’s not religion or politics. Thanks in advance.
