Game 129: Big Mike in Kansas City
Big Mike, big inning lead Yankees to 8-1 win over Royals

Highlights of tonight’s Double-A Trenton game are in the video above. Here are two quick notes:

  • The Yankees have signed RHP Wilking Rodriguez to a minor league deal, according to Matt Eddy. The 24-year-old was up with the Royals earlier this year (two innings) and had a 2.87 ERA (3.32 FIP) in 15.2 Triple-A innings before being released. Rodriguez hasn’t pitched much the last few years due to injuries.
  • RHP Andy Beresford and 1B Bo Thompson have both been suspended 50 games after testing positive for an amphetamine, MLB announced. Beresford was with Low-A Charleston and Thompson was with the Rookie GCL Yanks after being the team’s 13th rounder this year.

Triple-A Scranton (4-2 loss to Rochester)

  • RF Ramon Flores: 1-4, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 0-2, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K — five strikeouts and eight walks in his last six games

  • 3B Scott Sizemore: 2-4
  • RHP Bryan Mitchell: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 5/4 GB/FB — 54 of 91 pitches were strikes (59%) … he’s had a nice little run in Triple-A after only a handful of starts in Double-A
  • RHP Preston Claiborne: 2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 1/4 GB/FB — 21 of 30 pitches were strikes (70%)

Double-A Trenton (9-2 win over Akron)

  • RF Jake Cave: 3-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 CS — third straight multi-hit game
  • LF Ben Gamel: 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K
  • C Gary Sanchez: 1-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K — 13 homers in 105 games this year after hitting 15 in 117 games last year
  • 1B Greg Bird: 2-3, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K — seven homers in 21 games with Trenton after hitting seven in 75 games with Tampa
  • 3B Dante Bichette Jr.: 1-4, 1 R
  • CF Mason Williams: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB — grand slam!
  • Daniel Camarena: 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 12 K, 4/4 GB/FB — 74 of 99 pitches were strikes (75%) … best start of his career right there
  • RHP Nick Goody: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 1/2 GB/FB — 14 of 22 pitches were strikes (64%)

Both High-A Tampa and Low-A Charleston had scheduled off-days.

Short Season Staten Island (2-1 win over Brooklyn in ten innings, walk-off style) the pitching staff struck out 16 guys in ten innings

  • LF Chris Breen: 2-4, 1 R, 1 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — walk-off homer … I’m pretty sure he’s had three or four walk-off hits this year
  • 3B Ty McFarland: 1-3, 1 BB, 2 K
  • C Luis Torrens: 2-4
  • RF Austin Aune: 0-2, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 CS, 1 E (fielding) — was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the ninth

  • LHP Jonny Drozd: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 22/0 K/BB in 14.2 innings for the undrafted free agent

Rookie GCL Yanks2 (3-2 loss to GCL Braves)

  • LF Jose Figueroa: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
  • SS Yancarlos Baez: 1-3, 1 SB
  • RHP Joey Maher: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 1 HB, 4/0 GB/FB — third game back from an unknown injury
