Yankees can't finish sweep, waste too many opportunities in 5-3 loss to Rays
Fan Confidence Poll: July 31st, 2017

In case you missed it earlier, the Yankees have acquired Jaime Garcia from the Twins for RHP Zack Littell and LHP Dietrich Enns. With Littell traded, sleeper RHP Cody Carroll has jumped into MLB.com’s top 30 Yankees prospects. Carroll has a 2.24 ERA (3.09 FIP) with 31.6% strikeouts and 10.2% walks in 52.1 relief innings with High-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton this year. He’s one of those random college arms the Yankees grab in the late rounds of the draft and then bam, a year later he’s throwing 96-97 with a nasty slider.

Triple-A Scranton (3-2 win over Charlotte)

  • CF Jake Cave: 2-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 K, 1 CS — 28-for-61 (.459) with three doubles, one triple, and five homers during his 16-game hitting streak
  • RF Billy McKinney: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 E (fielding) — remember how much he struggled earlier this year? he’s up to .279/.354/.500
  • 2B Cito Culver: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI — that’s his career high tenth homer … he took White Sox RHP Lucas Giolito deep
  • LHP Nestor Cortes: 4.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 2/2 GB/FB — 41 of 65 pitches were strikes (63%) … pretty excellent spot start … he started today in place of Enns, and I imagine LHP Caleb Smith will take over this rotation spot next time around
  • RHP Gio Gallegos: 1 IP, zeroes, 3 K — threw an Immaculate Inning (nine pitches, nine strikes, three strikeouts) … 58/9 K/BB in 32.2 innings down here

Double-A Trenton (3-2 win over Altoona in eleven innings)

  • 2B Jorge Mateo: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 CS, 1 E (fielding) — so what do you think, is he still a Yankee at this time tomorrow?
  • DH Thairo Estrada: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 1B Ryan McBroom: 1-5, 1 R, 3 K
  • SS Abi Avelino: 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Domingo Acevedo: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 5/3 GB/FB — 50 of 80 pitches were strikes (63%) … 129/28 K/BB in 123 innings this year
  • RHP Will Carter: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HB, 7/1 GB/FB — 27 of 37 pitches were strikes (73%) … 70.7% ground ball rate for the sinkerballer

High-A Tampa (5-1 loss to Daytona)

  • SS Kyle Holder: 0-4, 1 K
  • LF Trey Amburgey: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB
  • 2B Nick Solak: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — 6-for-8 with a double and two homers his last two games
  • RF Alex Palma: 1-4
  • LHP Chaz Hebert: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 7/1 GB/FB — 41 of 57 pitches were strikes (72%)
  • LHP Stephen Tarpley: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1/1 GB/FB — 15 of 23 pitches were strikes (65%) … started the season on the disabled list with an unknown injury, but since being activated: 24.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 12 BB, 28 K

Low-A Charleston (2-0 loss to Greenville)

  • SS Hoy Jun Park & DH Isiah Gilliam: 0-4, 1 K — Gilliam stole base
  • 2B Oswaldo Cabrera & CF Estevan Florial: 1-4 — Cabrera stole a base
  • 1B Brandon Wagner: 1-3, 1 BB — the 2015 sixth rounder is quietly hitting .296/.391/.435 this season
  • RHP Alex Vargas: 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HB, 8/6 GB/FB — 62 of 83 pitches were strikes (75%) … 20-year-old has a 22/3 K/BB in 36 total innings this season

Short Season Staten Island (1-0 loss to Hudson Valley in ten innings, walk-off style)

  • LF Leonardo Molina: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RF Tommy Robinson: 0-4, 2 K
  • CF Dom Thompson-Williams: 0-4, 1 K
  • RHP Trevor Stephan: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 5/1 GB/FB — 32 of 46 pitches were strikes (70%) … 22/3 K/BB in 18 innings for this year’s third rounder
  • RHP Glenn Otto: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1/0 GB/FB, 1 E (fielding) — 22 of 31 pitches were strikes (71%) … 10/2 K/BB in five innings for this year’s fifth rounder

Rookie Pulaski (9-3 loss to Johnson City)

  • SS Jesus Bastidas: 0-3, 1 R, 1 HBP
  • C Saul Torres & RF Brayan Emery: both 0-4, 2 K — Torres picked a runner off third with a snap throw … Emery threw a runner out at the plate
  • DH Dermis Garcia: 2-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB — third straight game with a homer
  • 1B Eric Wagaman: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Daniel Ramos: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HBP, 4/4 GB/FB — 42 of 75 pitches were strikes (56%)

The two Rookie GCL Yanks affiliates had their regularly scheduled Sunday off-day.
