DotF: Martinez makes season debut in Staten Island’s win

June 20, 2018 by Mike Leave a Comment

Game 71: The Kid vs. The King
Yankees 7, Mariners 5: Gary & Giancarlo Are Here

RHP Anyelo Gomez’s season is over, according to Conor Foley. He needs shoulder surgery. Gomez had a breakout season last year, throwing 70.1 relief innings with a 1.92 ERA (2.19 FIP) with 31.0% strikeouts and 7.5% walks at four levels. That earned him a look in Spring Training with the Braves as a Rule 5 Draft pick, though he was later returned. Unfortunately injury. Went from big league camp to an uncertain future in three months.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (5-3 win over Lehigh Valley, walk-off style)

  • SS Tyler Wade: 0-4, 1 K
  • 3B Brandon Drury: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB
  • 1B Tyler Austin: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 K — here’s video of the homer … back-to-back days with a dinger
  • CF Billy McKinney: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K — got picked off first
  • PH-DH Zack Zehner: 1-1, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI — walk-off pinch-hit two-run homer
  • LHP Josh Rogers: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 4/7 GB/FB — 57 of 84 pitches were strikes (68%) … four homers in his last 19 innings (1.9 HR/9)
  • RHP Gio Gallegos: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 1/2 GB/FB — 29 of 41 pitches were strikes (71%)
  • RHP Cody Carroll: 0.1 IP, zeroes, 1 K — four pitches, three strikes

Double-A Trenton Thunder (16-5 win over Binghamton)

  • RF Trey Amburgey: 4-5, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB — had been in a 1-for-16 (.063) funk coming into the game
  • SS Abi Avelino: 0-5, 1 BB
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 3-4, 2 , 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — 10-for-27 (.370) in his last seven games
  • DH Jhalan Jackson: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — had been in a 2-for-24 (.083) slump going into the game
  • RHP Domingo Acevedo: 4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 4/3 GB/FB — 41 of 67 pitches were strikes (61%) … 21/11 K/BB in 28 innings … he’s missed a lot of time with injuries already, but the strikeouts this year are nowhere near his previous levels

High-A Tampa Tarpons (5-1 win over Fort Myers)

  • SS Diego Castillo: 2-5 — 15-for-45 (.333) in his last eleven games
  • DH Isiah Gilliam: 2-5, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K — 21-for-58 (.362) with three doubles and two homers during his 14-game hitting streak
  • 1B Brandon Wagner: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RF Dom Thompson-Williams: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K — three homers in his last 23 games after that eight homers in nine games binge
  • RHP Adonis Rosa: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 6/4 GB/FB

The Low-A Charleston RiverDogs are off until tomorrow for the All-Star break.

Short Season Staten Island Yankees (8-4 win over Lowell)

  • LF Frederick Cuevas: 2-3, 3 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 BB — been their best hitter by far in the early going
  • DH Ryan Lidge: 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K
  • 2B Jesus Bastidas: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
  • RHP Nolan Martinez: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 4/3 GB/FB — 49 of 78 pitches were strikes (63%) … injury issues limited the 2016 third rounder to 20.2 innings from 2016-17
  • LHP Reiver Sanmartin: 4.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 4/0 GB/FB — 44 of 60 pitches were strikes (73%) … the Yankees got him from the Rangers in the Ronald Herrera trade over the winter

Rookie Pulaski Yankees (6-5 loss to Danville in eleven innings, walk-off style)

  • LF Robert Javier: 2-6, 1 R, 2 K
  • 2B Ezequiel Duran: 0-5, 1 R, 1 HBP
  • CF Everson Pereira: 2-6, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K — irrationally excited about this kid
  • 3B Nelson Gomez: 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K
  • RHP Wellington Caceres: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 2/7 GB/FB — 45 of 68 pitches were strikes (66%)
  • RHP Gilmael Troya: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 2/2 GB/FB — 21 of 34 pitches were strikes (62%) … signed for $10,000 four years ago and it appeared he was developing into a nice under-the-radar prospect three years ago, but it hasn’t happened

Rookie GCL Yankees East (5-0 loss to GCL Phillies East)

  • DH Donny Sands: 1-1, 1 BB — he was pinch-hit for in the fifth inning … probably part of the plan to ease him back into things after the broken arm
  • RF Alexander Santana: 1-3, 1 K, 1 HBP
  • LHP Nestor Oronel: 3.1 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, 8/2 GB/FB — first game action since 2016 … the 21-year-old spent three years with the Pirates before being released, then the Yankees signed him last spring and he missed the entire 2017 season with an unknown injury … these guys usually amount to nothing, but, every once in a while, one of them turns into Jonathan Loaisiga

The Rookie GCL Yankees West had a scheduled off-day. A mid-week off-day in the GCL? Weird. Usually Sunday is their weekly off-day.
