The five biggest hits of the 2012 season

I usually run the updates on Sundays, but there was still enough news trickling in following the end of the season that I decided to push everything back a day. Should be back to normal next week. Just as a reminder, the Arizona Fall League is an extreme hitter’s environment, so take the stat lines with a grain of salt.

AzFL Scottsdale (11-3 loss to Surprise) Tuesday’s game
RF Slade Heathcott: 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB
2B David Adams: 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Zach Nuding: 1.2 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 29 of 51 pitches were strikes (57%) … yikes, that’s bad even for the AzFL
RHP Dellin Betances: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 0/1 GB/FB — 23 of 39 pitches were strikes (59%)
RHP Dan Burawa: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 4/0 GB/FB — 17 of 27 pitches were strikes (63%)

AzFL Scottsdale (5-2 win over Mesa) Wednesday’s game
C Austin Romine: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K — also threw out the speedy Matt Szczur trying to steal a base … seems like he’s on the taxi squad, which means he only plays twice a week … wish he was getting more at-bats than that after missing the entire first half
RHP Mark Montgomery: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1/0 GB/FB — seven of eleven pitches were strikes

AzFL Scottsdale (8-3 loss to Mesa) Thursday’s game
RF Slade Heathcott: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K
3B David Adams: 2-5, 1 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 E (fielding) — bouncing between second and third bases so far

AzFL Scottsdale (1-0 win over Salt River) Friday’s game … not going to see many 1-0 games out there
3B David Adams: 0-4

AzFL Scottsdale (5-3 win over Salt River) Saturday’s game
CF Slade Heathcott: 1-4, 2 RBI, 1 K — still doesn’t have an extra-base hit yet, but the 7/5 K/BB is promising
RHP Mark Montgomery: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 13 of 24 pitches were strikes (54%) … up to 108 strikeouts in 69.1 total innings this year (14.0 K/9)

AzFL Scottsdale (5-1 loss to Phoenix) Monday’s game … Sunday was a scheduled off-day
3B David Adams: 0-4
RHP Zach Nuding: 3 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 4/3 GB/FB — 34 of 56 pitches were strikes (61%) … the desert hasn’t been treating him kindly so far
RHP Dan Burawa: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 2/2 GB/FB — 16 of 26 pitches were strikes (62%)

The Puerto Rican League season does not start for another few weeks and rosters have yet to be announced, but here’s an update on the various winter ball leagues that have already started playing…

Dominican Winter League
OF Zoilo Almonte: 1 G, 0-1, 1 K — they play for keeps down there, so he could be sitting in favor of better (and older) players or just be banged up a bit
OF Melky Mesa: 1 G, 0-4, 2 K
LHP Juan Cedeno: 2 G, 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K — I wonder if they’ll add him to the 40-man roster to avoid losing him to free agency, he’s worth keeping around as an up-and-down lefty specialist but their simply might not be any room for him
RHP Kelvin Perez: 2 G, 0.2 IP, zeroes, 1 K

Both IF Jose Mojica and RHP Jose Ramirez are on DWL rosters but have not appeared in a game yet.

Mexican Pacific League
OF Jose Figueroa: 1 G, has not batted yet
IF Walt Ibarra: 5 G, 2-9, 1 K, 1 HBP
UTIL Ronnie Mustelier: 5 G, 6-19, 3 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 SB, 1 HBP
IF Ramiro Pena: 5 G, 6-15, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HBP — mashes in winter ball every single year, it’s crazy
RP Luis Niebla: 1 G, 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Venezuelan Winter League
C Francisco Arcia: 2 G, 0-1, 1 BB
IF Ali Castillo: 1 G, 1-1, 1 R
RF Ramon Flores: 3 G, 1-5, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP
C Jose Gil: 2 G, 1-7, 1 R, 2 K
C Gus Molina: 4 G, 1-14, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
UTIL Jose Pirela: 5 G, 4-18, 5 R, 1 2B, 2 BB, 3 K
RHP Pedro Guerra: 3 G, 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
RHP Jon Meloan: 3 G, 2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
LHP Vidal Nuno: 2 G, 3 IP, zeroes, 5 K — working out of the bullpen
