I missed this yesterday, but Josh Norris posted some video of SS Jorge Mateo. Mateo, 19, came into today stuck in an ugly 2-for-31 (.065) slump that dragged his season batting line down to .243/.299/.313 (80 wRC+) with Low-A Charleston. He does still have 29 steals, second most in the minors, and remains one of the organization’s top prospects. The assignment to full season ball was a bit aggressive though, especially since Mateo played just 15 games in rookie ball last year due to a hand injury. I wonder if they’ll drop him down to a more age appropriate level (Rookie Pulaski?) when the short season leagues start in a month.
Also, Keith Law (subs. req’d) posted some scouting notes from this week’s trip to see Double-A Trenton. He said RHP Luis Severino’s slider was the”best I’ve ever seen him throw” and added he is “comfortable saying Severino will end up with a plus slider and a plus changeup.” Law also touted relievers RHP Kyle Haynes and RHP Johnny Barbato for their arm strength but noted their command is lacking.
Triple-A Scranton (4-2 loss to Durham)
- CF Mason Williams: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
- LF Ben Gamel: 0-3, 1 BB
- 2B Rob Refsnyder: 1-4, 1 K — 35-for-97 (.361) with 12 walks (.436 OBP) during the 24-game on-base streak
- DH Ramon Flores: 0-4, 1 K
- RF Tyler Austin: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB
- RHP Bryan Mitchell: 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 5/4 GB/FB — 57 of 99 pitches were strikes (58%)
- RHP Nick Rumbelow: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 4/0 GB/FB — 24 of 35 pitches were strikes (69%) … with LHP Jacob Lindgren on his way to MLB, Rumbelow is arguably the team’s best relief prospect in the minors, and he might be next in line for a call-up among non-40-man guys
Double-A Trenton (6-5 loss to Erie)
- CF Jake Cave: 1-4, 1 2B — threw a runner out at home
- 3B Eric Jagielo: 1-4
- C Gary Sanchez: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K — fifth homer of the year and fourth in his last nine games
- SS Cito Culver: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K — snapped his 0-for-45 (!) slump with a fourth inning single … it was his first hit since April 25th, though, to be fair, he did spend two weeks on the DL earlier this month
- LHP Miguel Sulbaran: 6 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 5/6 GB/FB — 59 of 87 pitches were strikes (68%), plus he picked a runner off first
- RHP Johnny Barbato: 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 0/2 GB/FB — 17 of 33 pitches were strikes (52%), though the walk was intentional
High-A Tampa (7-2 loss to Charlotte)
- CF Mark Payton: 3-5, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS — 11-for-32 (.344) in his last nine games … also has a 24/21 K/BB in 36 games
- SS Tyler Wade: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SB, 1 E (fielding) — not only is he hitting .325/.366/.408 as a 20-year-old in High-A, he’s also quietly 17-for-23 (74%) in stolen base attempts
- 3B Miguel Andujar: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
- RF Michael O’Neill: 1-4, 1 K
- RHP Rookie Davis: 4 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 4/0 GB/FB — just back after an eleven-day stint on the DL, so whatever it was, it couldn’t have been too serious
Low-A Charleston (5-4 win over Greenville)
- SS Angel Aguilar: 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B
- CF Dustin Fowler: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI
- 1B Connor Spencer: 1-2, 1 R, 2 RBI — he’s a fascinating prospect because he’s a first baseman with a good hit tool but zero power … he hit one homer in three years at UC Irvine and hasn’t gone deep in 84 pro games since being the team’s eighth rounder last year, yet he’s hitting .298 with a 16/15 K/BB this year (.296 AVG in pro ball)
- 2B Gosuke Katoh: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
- LHP Jordan Montgomery: 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 1 WP, 7/2 GB/FB — 57 of 69 pitches were strikes (83%!) … last year’s fourth rounder is predictably dominating Low-A (2.27 ERA with a 50/11 K/BB in 39.2 innings) after spending three years as a starter in the ultra-competitive SEC with South Carolina … a promotion to High-A can’t be far away
