Game 83: No Easy A's
Yankees fall 4-3 to A's on a Brett Lawrie homer in extras

RHP Brady Lail was added to the Double-A Eastern League All-Star Roster, replacing RHP Nick Goody, who has indeed been promoted to Triple-A Scranton. Congrats to both. RHP Joel De La Cruz was sent down to Double-A Trenton to make room for Goody.

Also, RHP Wilking Rodriguez was activated off the suspended list and added to the Triple-A Scranton roster, according to Donnie Collins. Rodriguez was suspended 80 games in Spring Training after failing a drug test.

Triple-A Scranton (5-1 win over Syracuse)

  • CF Ben Gamel: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 2-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB — second straight game with a homer
  • RF Aaron Judge: 0-4, 1 K
  • 1B Greg Bird: 1-4, 1 2B
  • RHP Luis Severino: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 5/3 GB/FB — 52 of 82 pitches were strikes (63%) … good results but a bit of a grind, lots of pitches
  • RHP Wilking Rodriguez: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 0/2 GB/FB — 10 of 13 pitches were strikes (77%) in his season debut
  • RHP Branden Pinder: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2/3 GB/FB — 27 of 36 pitches were strikes (75%)

Double-A Trenton (8-6 win over New Hampshire)

  • CF Mark Payton: 1-5, 1 R, 2 RBI
  • LF Jake Cave: 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 SB
  • C Gary Sanchez: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 PB — fourth straight game with a homer … 12 homers in 53 games this year after hitting 13 in 110 games last year, and he’s still 2.5 years younger than the average Eastern League player … boost that trade value, Gary!
  • 2B Tony Renda: 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K
  • LHP Caleb Smith: 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 Balk, 4/2 GB/FB — 63 of 100 pitches were strikes
  • RHP Mark Montgomery: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 0/2 GB/FB — nine pitches, five strikes

High-A Tampa (6-4 loss to Brevard County)

  • SS Tyler Wade: 3-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 BB — homer shy of the cycle, but power is not his game at all … first multi-hit game in two weeks
  • 2B Abi Avelino: 1-5, 1 SB
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 1-4, 2 K, 1 SB
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-4, 1 RBI
  • LHP Jordan Montgomery: 7 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 2 WP, 5/7 GB/FB — 59 of 82 pitches were strikes (72%), plus he picked a runner off first

Low-A Charleston (3-2 win over Rome, walk-off style)

  • SS Jorge Mateo: 1-3, 1 2B, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 SB — up to 54 stolen bases
  • CF Austin Aune: 1-5, 1 RBI, 3 K — walk-off single
  • RF Alex Palma: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Matt Wotherspoon: 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 7/2 GB/FB — 55 of 89 pitches were strikes (62%)

Short Season Staten Island had a scheduled off-day.

Rookie level Pulaski (6-4 loss to Danville)

  • CF Carlos Vidal: 1-5, 1 R, 3 K — threw a runner out at third
  • SS Hyo-Jun Park: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 SB, 2 E (fielding, throwing) — 12-for-36 (.333) in his nine-game hit streak
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 SB
  • LF Frank Frias: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 E (fielding) — threw a runner out at the plate
  • RHP Drew Finley: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1/2 GB/FB

Rookie level GCL Yanks1 (6-5 loss to GCL Pirates)

  • SS Wilkerman Garcia: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 CS– hasn’t played a full nine innings yet … taking it real easy with him so far
  • 3B Donny Sands: 2-3 — got picked off second
  • LF Trey Amburgey: 2-5
  • RF Leonardo Molina: 1-3, 1 BB — they signed this kid in August 2013 and he’s still (still!) 17
  • RHP Alex Vargas: 4 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 4/3 GB/FB — 17-year-old originally signed with the Twins for $200,000 or so before his contract was voided due to some sort of documentation issue, so the Yankees scooped him up

The Rookie level GCL Yanks2‘s game was suspended due to rain in the third inning. It’ll be completed on July 22nd. Here’s the box score if you can’t wait that long.
