Scouting the Trade Market: Sonny Gray

Earlier today MLB announced team assignments for the 2017 Arizona Fall League. Yankees prospects will play for the Scottsdale Scorpions this year. They’ll be on a team with Mets, Reds, Angels, and Giants prospects. High-A Tampa manager Jay Bell will manage the team. The AzFL rosters won’t be announced until the end of August.

Triple-A Scranton (5-4 win over Norfolk in ten innings)

  • CF Jake Cave: 1-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB — hitting streak is up to 12 games
  • DH Mike Ford: 1-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI — go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the tenth … he hit it off former Yankees farmhand RHP Matt Wotherspoon, who was traded to the Orioles for international bonus money earlier this month
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-4, 1 RBI
  • RF Mason Williams: 2-4, 2 R, 1 SB — had been in a 4-for-36 (.111) slump
  • RHP Chance Adams: 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 1 WP, 4/4 GB/FB — 64 of 102 pitches were strikes (63%) … vintage Chance Adams tonight … his last few starts were a bit weird
  • LHP Chasen Shreve: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 17 of 27 pitches were strikes (63%)
  • RHP Ben Heller: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1/1 GB/FB — 18 of 34 pitches were strikes (53%)

Double-A Trenton (8-4 win over Hartford)

  • SS Jorge Mateo: 1-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB — four homers in 26 games with Trenton after hitting four homers in 69 games with Tampa … eight homers overall ties his career high set last year
  • CF Rashad Crawford: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 1B Ryan McBroom: 0-3, 1 BB
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 3-4, 2 R, 1 SB — 10-for-21 (.476) in his last seven games
  • 2B Abi Avelino: 1-4, 1 K
  • RHP Brody Koerner: 6.1 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 9/4 GB/FB — 58 of 88 pitches were strikes (66%) … nice rebound after allowing five runs in each of his last two starts

High-A Tampa (5-2 win over Palm Beach)

  • 1B Gosuke Katoh: 2-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB — he’s hitting .289/.384/.428 as a utility player these days
  • DH Trey Amburgey: 0-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP
  • SS Kyle Holder & RF Alex Palma: both 2-4, 1 2B — Palma drove in a run, Holder two
  • RHP Jose Mesa: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 3/2 GB/FB — 38 of 61 pitches were strikes (62%) … his stats in three spot starts this year: 9.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 15 K

Low-A Charleston and Short Season Staten Island both had scheduled off-days.

Rookie Pulaski (1-0 win over Elizabethton)

  • SS Jesus Bastidas, DH Saul Torres & 1B Eric Wagaman: both 0-3, 1 K
  • RF Steven Sensley: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI — that’s nine homers in 26 pro games for this year’s 12th rounder … only eleven other players in the system have hit 9+ homers this year … here’s the list
  • LF Brayan Emery: 0-3
  • RHP Luis Medina: 4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HB, 9/1 GB/FB — 33 of 70 pitches were strikes (47%) … stateside debut for the 18-year-old who signed for $280,000 back in 2015 … Josh Norris says Medina was 97-100 mph in the first inning tonight

Rookie GCL Yanks East Game One (3-0 loss to GCL Tigers East)

  • DH Jose Devers & CF Robert Javier: both 1-3 — Javier struck out and got caught stealing
  • RF Canaan Smith: 0-3, 1 K
  • LHP Tony Hernandez: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 5/5 GB/FB

Rookie GCL Yanks East Game Two (3-2 win over GCL Tigers East in eight innings, walk-off style)

  • SS Jose Devers: 0-2, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 SB — 17-year-old has five walks in 24 games this season, and he drew two of the five in this game
  • RF Robert Javier: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 CS
