Jeter day-to-day with a bruised right middle finger
Yankees quiet as 2011 trade deadline passes

The non-waiver trade deadline is 4pm ET today, though we’ll occasionally see news of a deal leak out a little later than that. I remember word of the Kerry Wood trade broke at like, 4:15pm ET last year. Do the Yankees have a starting pitcher up their sleeve? We’ll find out soon enough. Let’s keep track of the latest here throughout the day, with the most recent news up top…

  • The Yankees aren’t going after any big-name arms at the moment, if anything they’ll make small, incremental upgrades. (Morosi)
  • Nevermind, Wandy’s not going to Cleveland. The Yankees wanted the Astros to pick up half the money on the lefties deal, but Houston said no and talks about the left-hander are dead. (Justice, Heyman & Jayson Stark)
  • The Yankees are not deep in any talks, and get this, it sounds like Wandy is heading to the Indians for two minor leaguers. How about that. (Olney & Richard Justice)
  • Bell Mike Adams is apparently headed to the Rangers. It was unlikely the Yankees would get him anyway, but at least now we don’t have to worry about it. (Ken Rosenthal)

  • The Yankees were thinking of acquiring Bell and spinning him elsewhere, but that’s not going to happen. Just isn’t enough time. (Heyman)
  • Wandy would have to fall into the Yankees laps for a trade to happen, meaning the Astros would have to eat a big chunk of the money left on his deal. There’s no indication they’ll do so, and in fact the Yankees didn’t even bother scouting his last start. The two sides did talk this morning though. (Jack Curry, Buster Olney, Jon Paul Morosi, Sherman & Carig)
  • A team official said the Yankees are “staying tuned” to the market as they try to find pitching before the deadline. (Marc Carig)
  • The Yankees are making a push for Wandy Rodriguez. Houston reportedly wants impact prospects for the lefty, but I can’t imagine they’ll get them with that ugly contract ($10M in 2012, $13M in 2013, $13M player option for 2014). There’s no indication they’re near a deal. (Ken Rosenthal & Sherman)
  • The Yankees are in on Heath Bell, but neither side is optimistic a deal can be reached. Bell won’t come cheap, plus his strikeouts are way down and lefties handle him well. There’s no harm in adding a reliever, but let’s hope they don’t fall into the trap of chasing a big name. (Jon Heyman & Joel Sherman)
  • After checking in on Josh Willingham, the Yankees decided the asking price was too high. I’m not quite sure what they’d do with him anyway. Replace Jorge Posada as the designated hitter? (Ken Rosenthal)
  • The Rockies asked the Yankees for a package of Jesus Montero, Dellin Betances, Ivan Nova, and Phil Hughes in exchange for Ubaldo Jimenez. Brian Cashman countered with Hughes and others, and ultimately they pulled out of talks all together when Colorado refused to let them conduct a physical. I wanted Ubaldo, but I can’t imagine giving up several top pieces and not conducting a pre-trade physical on a guy that’s lost some velocity this year. (Heyman & Joel Sherman)
