What a fitting way to end an ugly, mostly uninteresting first half. I don’t think I’ve ever found a Yankees team to be as unlikable as this one. The Twins clobbered New York by the score of 10-4 on Sunday, as the hometown team was booed off the field for the following (no particular order):
- Bad hitting.
- Bad pitching.
- Bad defense.
That’s the trifecta right there. We’ve seen two of the three at the same time on several occasions on the first half, but the Bombers were nice enough to mush all three together on Sunday. I am very thankful I was at the Futures Game and saw a total of zero pitches of that nightmare. If you were hoping for an in-depth recap, sorry. You won’t get it here. I doubt you want to relive that game anyway.
The Yankees head into the All-Star break with 51 wins and 44 losses, a .537 winning that is their worst in the first half since … 2008 (.526). I have to say, closing out the first half by going 3-4 in seven home (!) games against the Royals and Twins is incredibly weak. This was the soft part of the schedule, they had to take advantage. Now they’ll have to try to make some noise by playing three in Fenway Park and four in the Ballpark in Arlington immediately after the break. Good luck with that.
MLB.com has the box score and video lowlights of Sunday’s loss while FanGraphs has some other stats and ESPN has the box score. Since both the Rays and Orioles won, the Yankees go into the break in sole possession of fourth place in the AL East. They are three games back of the second wildcard spot in the loss column. Not insurmountable, but not ideal either. They need help and soon if they want to make a run at this thing in Mariano Rivera’s final season.
