Thoughts on yet another Yankees' off-day

Got some notes to pass along:

  • The Dodgers have claimed RHP Layne Somsen off waivers from the Yankees, both teams announced. The Yankees designated Somsen for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Ike Davis last week. The 27-year-old threw six scoreless innings with Triple-A Scranton after being claimed off waivers from the Reds a few weeks back.
  • The Yankees have apparently signed Marshall C Aaron Bossi as an undrafted free agent, according to his Twitter feed. He was an infielder at Marshall but the tweet seems to indicate he’ll catch going forward. Bossi hit .333/.380/.484 with six homers in 55 games this spring.
  • OF Aaron Judge earned a place in Baseball America’s daily Prospect Report after hitting two home runs last night, so make sure you check that out. It’s not behind the paywall.

Triple-A Scranton (1-0 win over Toledo in seven innings)

  • CF Ben Gamel & LF Aaron Judge: both 0-4 — Gamel struck out once, Judge twice
  • DH Mark Teixeira: 1-2, 1 BB — second rehab game … he’s scheduled to play nine innings at first base tomorrow
  • C Gary Sanchez & RF Nick Swisher: 0-3 — Swisher struck out once … Sanchez is 8-for-39 (.205) since coming back from the thumb injury
  • 1B Tyler Austin: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI
  • RHP Chad Green: 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, 9/1 GB/FB — 62 of 94 pitches were strikes (66%) … 76/18 K/BB in 75.2 Triple-A innings … I’d like to see him get Ivan Nova’s next start, but I doubt it’ll happen
  • RHP Conor Mullee: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 0/1 GB/FB — nine of 12 pitches were strikes

Double-A Trenton Game One (3-0 win over Bowie) makeup of yesterday’s rainout

  • SS Tyler Wade: 1-3, 1 R, 1 K, 1 HBP
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-4 — 4-for-20 (.200) in five games since his big Double-A debut
  • 1B Billy Fleming: 2-3, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 E (pickoff)
  • RHP Vicente Campos: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 1 HB, 4/6 GB/FB — 61 of 90 pitches were strikes (68%) … he’s allowed two earned runs or less in seven of his last eight starts

Double-A Trenton Game Two (4-3 loss to Bowie in seven innings) their starters had a 43 innings scoreless streak snapped in the third inning

  • 2B Tyler Wade: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K — nice little doubleheader
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 3-4
  • LHP Jordan Montgomery: 5 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 4/3 GB/FB — 51 of 78 pitches were strikes (65%) … only the second time in 13 starts he’s allowed more than three runs

High-A Tampa (6-5 loss to Daytona)

  • DH Jorge Mateo: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 K
  • 2B Thairo Estrada: 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K
  • RF Austin Aune: 2-3, 3 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — he had ten triples last season, but that’s his first of 2016
  • SS Abi Avelino: 2-4, 1 RBI
  • RHP Domingo Acevedo: 4 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 6/1 GB/FB — 56 of 91 pitches were strikes (62%) … he had allowed four earned runs total in his previous four starts combined

Low-A Charleston is off until tomorrow for the All-Star break.

Short Season Staten Island (7-4 loss to West Virginia) that’s their first loss of the season … they’re now 5-1

  • 2B Jose Rosario: 2-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI — he’s been out a month since taking a pitch to the head in Triple-A … good to see he’s back and playing in games
  • CF Dom Thompson-Williams: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K
  • 1B Kane Sweeney: 2-4, 1 RBI — 8-for-22 (.364) through five games, though he’s already 23, so he’s older than pretty much everyone else in the league
  • DH Mandy Alvarez: 1-3, 1 RBI
  • 3B Drew Bridges: 2-4, 1 K
  • RHP Jonathan Padilla: 4.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 6/2 GB/FB — 52 of 80 pitches were strikes (65%)

Rookie Pulaski begins their season tomorrow. Here’s the roster in case you missed it (PDF link).

Rookie GCL Yanks East & West begin their seasons Friday. The rosters still haven’t been announced.
