DotF: Montgomery dominates again in Scranton’s win

Mailbag: Sanchez, McMahon, Eovaldi, Cano, CC, Rutherford

Got some notes and links to pass along:

  • RHP Bryan Mitchell (toe) was activated off the 60-day DL and optioned to Triple-A Scranton, the Yankees announced. They had an open 40-man roster spot, so no other move was required. Assuming Mitchell comes up when rosters expand on September 1st, he won’t spent 20 days on an optional assignment this year and won’t burn an option. He’ll have one left for next season.
  • Make sure you check out Josh Norris’ piece on all the talented teenagers the Yankees have playing in Pulaski. They’re all far away from the big leagues, yes, but they all offer premium tools as well. The Yankees brought in a ton of talent during their 2014-15 international signing spree.
  • OF Clint Frazier told Brendan Kuty he’s been pressing since coming over from the Indians in the Andrew Miller trade because he wanted to impress his new organization. “I’m feeling good, though. I’m in a good place. I’m in a good environment,” he said.

Triple-A Scranton (4-0 win over Syracuse) they have the best record in all of Triple-A at 83-49 … no other Triple-A team has more than 78 wins … Scranton’s magic number to clinch a postseason spot is three, so chances are it’ll happen this weekend

  • CF Mason Williams: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • 3B Rob Refsnyder: 1-3, 1 K, 1 HBP, 1 E (throwing) — he’s played third base eight times in 13 games since being sent down … he’s also 21-for-47 (.447) in those 13 games
  • DH Ben Gamel: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • 1B Chris Parmelee: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K — back from his back spasms
  • LF Clint Frazier: 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 E (fielding) — back-to-back games with a triple
  • RF Jake Cave: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
  • LHP Jordan Montgomery: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 5/3 GB/FB — 60 of 94 pitches were strikes (64%) … fourth straight scoreless outing … he’s allowed two runs in 31 Triple-A innings (0.58 ERA) … he now has a 2.09 ERA in 131 total innings this season … decent
  • LHP James Pazos: 1.1 IP, zeroes, 2 K — 12 of 16 pitches were strikes
  • RHP Nick Goody: 2 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 18 of 26 pitches were strikes (69%) … 32/1 K/BB in 23.1 innings with Scranton

Double-A Trenton (4-3 loss to Portland)

  • SS Tyler Wade: 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 3 K
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 1-4, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K — he leads all of minor league baseball with 14 triples
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 0-4, 1 K
  • RF Billy McKinney: 1-4, 3 K
  • 2B Abi Avelino: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Ronald Herrera: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 9/2 GB/FB — 67 of 102 pitches were strikes (66%) … 126/35 K/BB in 130.1 innings for the guy the Yankees got from the Padres in the Jose Pirela trade …  Pirela is hitting .248/.295/.387 in Triple-A this season, by the way

High-A Tampa (6-2 loss to Dunedin)

  • SS Jorge Mateo: 0-5, 2 K, 1 E (throwing) — only his sixth game at shortstop this month
  • DH Jeff Hendrix & 2B Thairo Estrada: both 1-5 — Thairo scored a run
  • RF Trey Amburgey: 1-4, 1 K, 1 SB
  • CF Rashad Crawford: 2-3, 1 BB — 21-for-71 (.296) in his last 19 games, so that’s fun
  • LHP Nestor Cortes: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 10 K, 1 WP, 6/1 GB/FB — 49 of 83 pitches were strikes (59%) … 111/21 K/BB in 100.1 total innings this year
  • RHP Jordan Foley: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 21 of 26 pitches were strikes (81%) … 84/32 K/BB in 62.1 innings

Low-A Charleston (7-1 loss to Columbia)

  • SS Kyle Holder: 0-2, 3 BB — 13.9% strikeout rate and 4.2% walk rate, so he’s going to put the ball in play

  • LF Alex Palma: 0-4, 1 K
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 0-3, 3 K
  • C Luis Torrens: 2-3, 1 BB — it’s been a struggle of late, so hopefully he finishes the season nice and strong
  • CF Ricardo Ferreira: 1-4
  • RHP Luis Cedeno: 3.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 3/3 GB/FB — 55 of 87 pitches were strikes (63%)
  • RHP Erik Swanson: 1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 14 of 17 pitches were strikes (82%) … he came over in the Carlos Beltran trade … I assume he’s working in relief now to control his workload … he’s up to 96.1 innings this season after throwing only 15.1 last year around a flexor injury

Short Season Staten Island (4-0 win over Aberdeen)

  • 2B Nick Solak: 2-3, 1 R, 1 BB — had been in a little 3-for-18 (.167) slump
  • CF Timmy Robinson: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI — this year’s 21st rounder has 28 extra-base hits (18 doubles, three triples, seven homers) and 24 singles
  • 3B Drew Bridges: 0-4, 2 K
  • SS Angel Aguilar: 0-4, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Simon De La Rosa: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 1 HB, 3/4 GB/FB — 52 of 94 pitches were strikes (55%) … 66/24 K/BB in 60.1 innings here after a 38/27 K/BB in 31 innings with Charleston

  • C Donny Sands: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB — first pro homer for last year’s eighth rounder … he didn’t go deep in the GCL last year despite a .309/.395/.361 batting line
  • 3B Dermis Garcia: 0-3, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 E (throwing) — he’s played 52 games this year … 39.0 K% and 13.3 BB% in the first 26, and 27.9 K% and 16.3 BB% in the last 26
  • RF Isiah Gilliam: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • 1B Brandon Wagner: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • CF Leonardo Molina: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB
