Game 77: Another day, another new Baby Bomber
Update: Fowler exits game with ruptured patella tendon

Here are the day’s notes:

  • In case you missed it earlier, RHP Domingo Acevedo and OF Estevan Florial will represent the Yankees at the 2017 Futures Game. I wonder if the Yankees held RHP Chance Adams out because they’re planning to call him up at some point soon. They supposedly did that with RHP Luis Severino in 2015. The Futures Game is Sunday, July 9th at Marlins Park.
  • Two Yankees are going to the Triple-A All-Star Game: OF Dustin Fowler and LHP Caleb Smith. Here’s the full roster (PDF link). Lehigh Valley and Indianapolis fans stuffed the ballot for the starters, meaning the few remaining roster spots had to be spread out among the other teams. Deserving players like Adams, SS Tyler Wade, and OF Clint Frazier were squeezed off the roster.

Triple-A Scranton (7-6 win over Syracuse)

  • 3B Donovan Solano: 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 K
  • RF Clint Frazier: 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB
  • DH Ji-Man Choi: 3-5, 3 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K — four homers in his last seven games after hitting two homers in his first 45 games
  • SS Abi Avelino: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Brady Lail: 5.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 8/4 GB/FB — 59 of 91 pitches were strikes (65%)
  • RHP Ben Heller: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 0/3 GB/FB — 18 of 22 pitches were strikes (82%) … 44/13 K/BB in 34 innings

Double-A Trenton (8-2 win over Richmond)

  • SS Jorge Mateo: 2-4, 3 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB — 4-for-10 with five walks in three games since the promotion
  • CF Rashad Crawford: 2-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 3 RBI
  • 2B Thairo Estrada: 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI
  • RF Billy McKinney: 2-4, 1 3B — his recent hot streak has him up to .250/.337/.431 on the season
  • LHP Justus Sheffield: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 7/3 GB/FB — 51 of 83 pitches were strikes (61%) … 20.2 K% and 8.9 BB% this year after 23.7 K% and 9.9% BB% in High-A last year
  • RHP Will Carter: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 20 GB/FB — 15 of 27 pitches were strikes (56%) … the turbosinker hasn’t been working since he came back from the bone spurs
  • RHP Colten Brewer: 1 IP, zeroes, 1/1 GB/FB — 14 of 20 pitches were strikes

High-A Tampa‘s game was suspended due to lightning with one out in the bottom of the fourth. It’ll be completed at some point next month and I’ll update the stats then. Here’s the box score. OF Tito Polo had two hits and LHP Ian Clarkin allowed an earned run in 3.1 innings before the bad weather.

Low-A Charleston was rained out. The game was canceled and will not be made up.

Short Season Staten Island was rained out. They’re going to play a doubleheader tomorrow.

Rookie Pulaski (5-2 win over Bluefield)

  • SS Jesus Bastidas: 0-4, 1 K
  • RF Steven Sensley: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 K — this year’s 12th rounder is 6-for-13 (.462) with three doubles and a homer in four pro games
  • 1B Dermis Garcia: 0-3, 1 BB
  • DH Eric Wagaman: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K — this year’s 13th round pick has started his career with a seven-game hitting streak
  • C Saul Torres: 1-4, 2 K
  • RHP Jio Orozco: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 4/4 GB/FB – 52 of 79 pitches were strikes (66%) … no more than one earned run allowed in five of his last six starts

Rookie GCL Yanks East (4-3 win over GCL Tigers in eleven innings, walk-off style) the new extra innings rule was used in this game, so every half-inning after the ninth started with a runner on second base … that rule is being tested in rookie ball this year as a way to shorten games and avoid overworking players, especially pitchers

  • SS Joe Devers: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 SB — 5-for-11 (.455) with two doubles in three game so far for the 17-year-old
  • LF Canaan Smith: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 3 K — left the game after striking out in the tenth for an unknown reason
  • RF Jonathan Amundaray: 0-6, 4 K
  • 1B Nelson Alvarez: 1-3, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 1 K — walk-off single
  • 3B-LF Lisandro Blanco: 2-5, 1 RBI, 3 K
  • RHP Wellington Diaz: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 2/6 GB/FB
  • RHP Harold Cortijo: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1/1 GB/FB — pro debut for this year’s 14th rounder
  • RHP Ron Marinaccio: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2 WP, 4/0 GB/FB — pro debut for this year’s 19th rounder

Rookie GCL Yanks West (6-5 loss to GCL Blue Jays)

  • LF Evan Alexander: 0-5
  • SS Oswald Peraza: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K — got picked off first
  • RF Juan De Leon: 0-4, 3 K–
  • DH Miguel Flames: 0-2, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP
  • RHP Deivi Garcia: 3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 1/3 GB/FB — 18-year-old had an 18/2 K/BB in 15.1 innings in the Dominican Summer League this year before coming to the GCL
