Cashman doesn’t expect any moves during GM Meetings

November 8, 2012 by Mike 33 Comments

Possible Trade Partner: San Diego Padres
What Went Right: Nick Swisher

Via Chad Jennings: Brian Cashman told reporters that he doesn’t anticipate making any moves during the GM Meetings this week. “On the front end, it’s baby steps for us,” said the GM. “We have qualifying offers out there, which if you add up, it’s a lot of money. I don’t foresee us really being able to do anything until we have decisions made on those qualifying offers regardless … I’ve got a little bit of an idea of which players are available on the trade market, but maybe I leave here with some other candidates that I wasn’t aware of, or you drill down in further conversation and you see if you can pry a guy that maybe isn’t available but you can try to take from somebody or convince them to give up. We’ll see. I don’t know.”

Decisions for the three qualifying offers (Nick Swisher, Hiroki Kuroda, Rafael Soriano) are due tomorrow afternoon. Swisher and Soriano will almost certainly reject the offer while there’s a chance Kuroda will accept. All three decisions will impact the club’s offseason moves going forward either way. The GM Meetings don’t often generate much buzz, but the groundwork for potential deals is usually laid this week.
