Via David Collier, first rounder Ty Hensley said he expects his decision about whether to sign with the Yankees or attend Ole Miss to come right down to Friday’s 5pm ET deadline. The two sides have already wrapped up negotiations, they’re just waiting on his decision. If Hensley does not sign, the Yankees will receive the 31st overall pick in next year’s draft as compensation, but obviously they’d rather have the player now. One way or another, we’ll have an answer in less than four days.

Via K. Levine-Flandrup, contract talks between the Yankees and first round pick Ty Hensley are complete. Now they’re just waiting on Hensley to decide whether he wants to turn pro for millions of dollars or follow through on his commitment to Ole Miss. The deadline to sign draft picks is 5pm ET this Friday.

Hensley, the 30th overall selection, is slotted for $1.6M but the Yankees can afford to pay him up to $1,815,910 without surrendering a pick in next year’s draft. That would represent the fifth largest bonus New York has ever given to a drafted player. Hensley has reportedly taken his physical already, which must be completed before the deadline. He said he hoped to sign quickly soon after the draft, but I’m guessing his agent/advisor got a hold of him and told him to wait it out. According to his Twitter feed, first rounder Ty Hensley is heading to Tampa for a few days to take his physical. That’s a pretty good indication that the two sides are very close to an agreement if one isn’t already in place. Slot money for the 30th overall pick is $1.6M and I’m guessing his bonus will come very close to that. Maybe a little over, maybe a little under.

Hensley told reporters shortly after the draft that he hopes to sign quickly and reach the big leagues by age 21. The signing deadline was moved up a full month to July 13th this year, so he should be able to throw some rookie ball innings once he officially joins the organization. Via Jon Heyman, the Rockies were set to take Ty Hensley with the tenth overall pick Monday night, but a chain-of-events landed the right-hander in the Yankees’ lap at the 30th overall pick. The Pirates were set to take prep OF David Dahl with the eighth overall pick, but they instead took Stanford RHP Mark Appel when he slid down the board. When Dahl was still available for Colorado at ten, they went with him over Hensley.

I also remember hearing somewhere — I forget if it was a podcast or the MLB.com broadcast or something else entirely — that the Rays targeted Hensley for the 25th overall pick but went with Clemson 3B Richie Shaffer when he was surprisingly still on the board. Either way, I’m glad the Yankees were able to nab a big power arm like Hensley and based on his recent comments, it sure sounds like he’s thrilled as well.

Via Ryan Aber, first round pick Ty Hensley said negotiations with the Yankees will begin immediately and he expects to sign soon. “I’m ready to get this thing started,” said the prep right-hander. “I want to get out and play as soon as possible … My goal is to be there (in the big leagues) by the time I’m 21 years old.”

Slot money for the 30th overall pick is $1.6M and I expect Hensley’s eventual deal to come in relatively close to that amount, plus or minus.
