The Yankees play their final game of the Grapefruit League season this afternoon. They still have an exhibition game with the Braves at SunTrust Park tomorrow night, but that’s not in Florida, so it doesn’t count as a Grapefruit League game, and I am a stickler for details dammit.
Anyway, the Yankees are in Port Charlotte to take on the Rays today, and not many regulars made the road trip. This afternoon’s starting pitcher? Brian Keller, a former 39th round draft pick who had a 3.13 ERA (2.54 FIP) in 144 Single-A innings last season. Fun fact: Keller led the farm system with 157 strikeouts last season. Here is the Rays’ lineup and here is the Yankees’ lineup:
- 2B Tyler Wade
- CF Aaron Hicks
- 1B Tyler Austin
- RF Billy McKinney
- C Austin Romine
- SS Ronald Torreyes
- 3B Jace Peterson
- DH Shane Robinson
- LF Zack Zehner
RHP Brian Keller
Not sure who else made the trip and is on the bench/in the bullpen, but based on the starting lineup and starting pitcher, I’m guessing it is a bunch of non-top prospects.
Nice and sunny day in Port Charlotte today. The Yankees managed to get through the entire Grapefruit League season without one rainout or even one rain delay. A minor miracle. World Series here they come. Today’s game will begin shortly after 1pm ET and you can watch live on MLB Network and MLB.tv. Enjoy the game.
