Here’s an open thread for night. MLB Network is showing a live spring game tonight (D’Backs vs. Padres) plus the Islanders are playing. That’s pretty much it. Talk about anything except religion or politics here. Thanks in advance.
Open Thread: March 4th Camp Notes
Chad Green started and struck out four in two scoreless innings. He looked like regular ol’ Chad Green. Aroldis Chapman made his spring debut and faced three batters before reaching his pitch limit: hit batsman, single, ground out. A pair of Danny Espinosa errors contributed to three unearned runs in 1.1 innings for Ben Heller. Here are the box score and video highlights, and here is the rest of the day’s news from Tampa:
- Stanton got a rude introduction to left field today. He had one fly ball clank off his glove and another catchable ball go over his head. The sun was clearly an issue both times. “Sun vision, ability to see through the sun,” he joked when asked what he needs to be comfortable in left. Stanton expects to play left again next time out. [Bryan Hoch, Coley Harvey]
- Clint Frazier (concussion) rode a stationary bike for 20 minutes today and said he feels “better,” though he is still experiencing some headaches. “(The headaches are) in and out … some days I have it some days I don’t,” he said. Frazier will rest Monday then work out a bit Tuesday. Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) remains shut down. [Hoch, Erik Boland, Brendan Kuty]
- David Robertson has been out with food poisoning, which is why he’s yet to appear in a game. He’s scheduled to throw a simulated game Tuesday, then pitch in a game later this coming week. “He is a guy who won’t need a lot of outings,” said Aaron Boone. [Hoch, George King]
- The Yankees have their first off-day of the spring tomorrow and it sounds like it’ll be a full off-day with no workouts scheduled. Sanchez, Judge, and Stanton are among those who will make the trip for Tuesday’s road game. That game will not be televised. [Harvey]
Here’s an open thread for the rest of the weekend. This afternoon’s game will be replayed on YES (5pm ET) and MLB Network (6am ET). The Knicks, Nets, and Devils are playing and there are a few college basketball games on the schedule. Also, the Oscars are on tonight (8pm ET on ABC), if that’s your thing. Use this thread to talk about that stuff or anything else that isn’t religion or politics. Thanks in advance.
Open Thread: March 3rd Camp Notes
Chance Adams got the start and allowed a hit and a walk in two scoreless innings. Justus Sheffield allowed a run in his two innings of work, partly because Gleyber Torres couldn’t handle a hard-hit grounder. Brady Lail had a rough afternoon, allowing two runs on four hits in 1.1 innings. Jonathan Holder tossed the final two innings for the Grapefruit League save. Here are the box score and video highlights, and here is the rest the day’s news from Spring Training:
- Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) and Clint Frazier (concussion) remain shut down with no firm timetable for a return. The Yankees aren’t going to push either guy this early in camp. Frazier will see a doctor tomorrow. Yesterday’s MRI can back “clean,” according to Aaron Boone. [Brendan Kuty]
- Luis Severino and Sonny Gray both threw simulated games today. Here’s video of Severino and here’s video of Gray. “Severino was good. Real sharp,” said Boone. Severino is scheduled to start Thursday. Chad Green is starting tomorrow’s game, which will be televised. [Coley Harvey]
- Domingo Acevedo has yet to pitch in a game this spring and Boone said the Yankees are trying to build his arm strength. Hmmm. Boone says Acevedo is healthy though. Acevedo, Severino, Aroldis Chapman, David Robertson, and Albert Abreu (appendix) are the only pitchers in camp who have yet to appear in a game. [Kuty]
- And finally, Russell Wilson left camp today. He left everyone in the clubhouse an autographed football, which is pretty cool. [Pete Caldera]
This is the daily open thread. MLB Network is showing spring games through the rest of the day, both the (hockey) Rangers and Islanders are playing, and there’s a bunch of college hoops on the schedule. Talk about anything except religion or politics here.
Open Thread: March 2nd Camp Notes
Masahiro Tanaka started and was not sharp at all. Everything was up in the zone. The result: Four runs on four hits and a walk in 1.1 innings. Ouch. Chasen Shreve, who seems to be a lock for the Opening Day roster, tossed 1.2 scoreless innings in his spring debut. Tommy Kahnle struck out two in a scoreless inning in his spring debut. Jordan Montgomery struck out five in three scoreless innings. Here are the box score and video highlights, and here’s the rest of the day’s news from Tampa:
- Jacoby Ellsbury was scratched from today’s lineup with tightness in his right side and tests revealed a “mild oblique strain,” according to Aaron Boone. Even mild oblique strains can linger. They’re tricky. There’s no timetable for Ellsbury’s return. [Coley Harvey, Bryan Hoch]
- Clint Frazier is still experiencing concussion symptoms and went for an MRI today. “Yesterday when we upped his workload, it didn’t go as well as we had hoped. With the concussion thing, we’re just going to be very careful, very cautious with it,” said Boone. [Pete Caldera, Erik Boland]
- Russell Wilson pinch-hit today and struck out. He’s leaving camp Sunday. Wilson went out to dinner with several Yankees last night and spoke about needing “consistency and obsession” with having a good daily routine. “Winning is a habit. You have to train that way,” he said. [Caldera]
- Chance Adams will be on the mound tomorrow afternoon. The game will be televised. Andujar, Bird, Gregorius, Brandon Drury, Estevan Florial, Aaron Hicks, Austin Romine, Justus Sheffield, and Gleyber Torres will all make the road trip as well. [Caldera, Pete Abraham, Mike Mazzeo]
- MLBPA chief Tony Clark visits all 30 teams in Spring Training, and today he was with the Yankees. He said Yankees players have “significant” concern about the free agent market. “They all understand how what happens with one (player) effects another,” he said. [Boland]
This is tonight’s open thread. This afternoon’s game will be replayed on YES (7pm ET) and MLB Network (6am ET). MLB Network will replay a different game tonight. All the local hockey and basketball teams are in action except the Nets, plus there’s some college basketball on as well. Talk about anything here as long as it isn’t religion or politics. Thanks in advance.
Open Thread: March 1st Camp Notes
Seven up, six down for CC Sabathia, whose only baserunner allowed came when Jace Peterson bobbled a ground ball. Domingo German allowed a solo homer and otherwise looked sharp in his three innings of work. Gio Gallegos retired zero of the four batters he faced to make a mess of things in the eighth. Ben Heller picked him up and retired all six batters he faced for the all important Grapefruit League save. Here are the box score and video highlights, and here is the rest of the day’s news from camp:
- Jacoby Ellsbury is going to spend some time in left field this spring. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are working out there, and Aaron Boone said the plan is to give all the outfielders some left field time. Ellsbury has 86 big league games worth of experience in left, most coming very early in his career. [Erik Boland]
- Russell Wilson might actually play tomorrow, his final day in camp. “We’ll see. I wouldn’t expect it. It’s at least possible,” said Boone today. The Yankees are still discussing it and apparently Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is okay with it. [Randy Miller, Brady Henderson]
- Masahiro Tanaka will make his first spring start tomorrow, and the game will be televised. Luis Severino is expected to throw a simulated game Saturday while Chance Adams starts on the road against the Red Sox. The current pitching schedule seems to indicate Tanaka and Severino will start the first two games of the regular season in that order.
This is tonight’s open thread. MLB Network is replaying a spring game tonight (not the Yankees), plus the Devils and Nets are playing. That’s about it. Anything except religion or politics goes here.
Open Thread: February 28th Camp Notes
In the late innings, Estevan Florial singled in two runs, went first-to-third on a wild pitch, then scored what was then the game-tying run on another wild pitch. He really makes things happen. Luis Cessa started and fell apart in his third inning of work, giving up a three-run homer to John Hicks. Adam Warren tossed three scoreless innings — glad to see they’re stretching him out a bit — and Dellin Betances allowed a run in two-thirds of an inning before hitting his pitch limit. Here are the box score and video highlights, and here’s the rest of the day’s news from Tampa:
- In case you’re wondering, Judge said he and his surgically repaired left shoulder felt great following today’s game. “I don’t feel anything. It feels great. That’s the kind of progress we want. We just have to build on that and take it into our next game,” said Judge, who is scheduled to rest Thursday and play right field Friday. [Randy Miller]
- Clint Frazier, who suffered a concussion crashing into the wall over the weekend, didn’t feel good yesterday — “I can’t even sit in my living room without feeling like (crap). I can’t shake the headaches,” he said this morning — but felt better this afternoon. He took swings today and could resume taking batting practice in a few days. [Erik Boland, Pete Caldera]
- CC Sabathia will make his spring debut tomorrow afternoon. That game will be televised. Brandon Drury, Aaron Hicks, Miguel Andujar, Gleyber Torres, and Florial are all scheduled to make the trip. [Mike Mazzeo]
- Chance Adams will start Saturday against the Red Sox. That game will be televised. So it’s Sabathia tomorrow, Masahiro Tanaka on Friday, and Adams on Saturday. [Boland]
Here is the nightly open thread. If you’re interested, this afternoon’s game will be replayed on MLB Network (8pm ET) and YES (11pm ET). Both the (hockey) Rangers and Islanders are playing as well. Talk about anything except religion and politics here.
Open Thread: February 27th Camp Notes
Chad Green made his first start of the spring and allowed a solo homer to Russell Martin in 1.2 innings before hitting his pitch limit. David Hale (two runs in one inning), J.P. Feyereisen (two runs in one inning), and Josh Rogers (two runs in 1.1 innings) all had trouble on the mound. I’ll set the over/under on their combined innings total for the Yankees this season at 9.5. Here is the box score and here are the rest of the day’s notes from Tampa:
- The upcoming rotation: Luis Cessa (Wednesday), CC Sabathia (Thursday), and Masahiro Tanaka (Friday). Luis Severino will make his first spring start in the coming days as well. Sabathia, Dillon Tate, and Jordan Montgomery threw bullpen sessions today. [Brendan Kuty]
- Aaron Judge is still scheduled to make his spring debut tomorrow. “(It’s) just about trusting (the shoulder) and trusting how it feels, and making sure I continue to build up my strength. It’s about making sure it’s pain-free when I wake up each morning,” he said. Judge will DH tomorrow, rest Thursday, then play right field Friday. [Coley Harvey, Erik Boland]
- Without being asked, Russell Wilson gave a speech at camp yesterday. “He just talked about some of his principles, his leadership things that he talks about,” said Boone. Brian Cashman said he’s not opposed to giving Wilson an at-bat at some point, though they’ll talk it over with Seahawks first. [Kuty, Randy Miller, Pete Caldera]
Here is tonight’s open thread. MLB Network is replaying a spring game tonight and both the Devils and Nets are playing. Talk about those games or anything else here, as long as it’s not religion or politics.
