Reports: Santana turns down the Twins

November 21, 2007 by Benjamin Kabak 51 Comments

According to Buster Olney, Johan Santana turned down a five-year, $93-million offer to stay in Minnesota. As this point, the Twins will probably look to trade him, and any team looking to acquire Santana will have to come up with a better offer than that. So let’s play the GM game. If you’re the Yankees, what do you do? Do you offer up a package of top prospects for Santana? Do you hope he hits the market next year and overwhelm him? A six-year commitment of over $20 million is a lot for any player, let alone a pitcher.

Yanks interested in Johan Santana

November 9, 2007 by Benjamin Kabak 9 Comments

In other news, the sun will rise in the east and set in the west; water is wet; and grass is green. Seriously though, Tyler Kepner reports that the Yanks could land Johan Santana without trading Phil, Joba or Ian. The market for Santana should develop before the owners’ meetings next month. Once the Twins realize they can’t afford him, the frenzy will begin. The plot thickens.

Yanks already asked about Santana

October 12, 2007 by Joe Pawlikowski 24 Comments

This one comes from Tuesday. Don’t know how we missed it. Peter Gammons reports that the Yanks have already had talks regarding Johan Santana (subscription required). The conversation was based around Chien-Ming Wang. Gammons reports no conclusions, but if I’m the Twins GM, the first letter of my response would have started with “F,” and the second word would have been “off.”

Yo-yo for Johan

August 1, 2007 by Benjamin Kabak 16 Comments

Johan Santana is upset the Twins didn’t do much to bolster their club yesterday. In other news, Brian Cashman (and Yankee bloggers everywhere) seen salivating over the checkbook in anticipation of Santana’s looming 2008 free agency.

Salivating over Santana

April 11, 2007 by Benjamin Kabak 4 Comments

SI.com’s Jon Heyman reports that Johan Santana has broken off contract extension talks with the Twins. Santana, who wants a Barry Zito-sized extension, has a four-year contract that ends after 2008. The Twins offered him two years at $18 million a season, but Santana is looking for long-term stability. I can only dream that one day Santana, Hughes and Wang will be the subject of some bad sexual pun on the back of the Post or Daily News.
